The Kia Sorento name has had a long history for Kia and has consistently been one of the company’s top sellers. Back in 2021, we saw an all-new fourth-generation model. For 2025, Kia is giving the Sorento a significant refresh. I’m here on the 2023 LA Auto Show’s show floor, and this is the 2025 KIA Sorento Hybrid. Let’s take a first look.

Before we discuss all the exterior styling changes for the 2025 KIA Sorento, let me remind you what’s underneath the hood. Like in the pre-refresh model, Kia will offer four different powertrains for the Sorento in 2024 and 2025.

This model is probably the sweet spot—it’s the Sorento Hybrid, which means it has a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline direct injection four-cylinder paired with an electric motor, with available all-wheel drive to deliver 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Those figures are from a 2023 model; Kia wasn’t ready to share the powertrain specs for the 2025 KIA Sorento Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid. They did say that the 2024 version, which will also get the refresh, will come with a 2.5L gas engine delivering 191 horsepower or a turbocharged version of that 2.5L engine delivering 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque.

You can choose between front or all-wheel drive. A new XPR model will give you better towing capacity, up to 4,000 pounds. However, this KIA Sorento Hybrid 2025 version will be delayed by about a year compared to the gas-only model. I suspect it should continue to be one of the top-selling powertrain choices for the Sorento.

2025 KIA Sorento Exterior Styling

Let’s go ahead and close up the hood and talk about the exterior styling. First, this color is a new color called Midnight Lake Blue. It certainly looks perfect along the lines of the new Sorento. If you’ve seen some newer Kia products, like the EV9 or the refreshed Telluride, you can see that Kia has significantly changed the front end.

It has an EV9-meets-Telluride look grafted onto the front fascia. The new Kia logo, an updated version of their tiger-nose grille, and amber-illuminated daytime running lights are present. These lights have a signature style that goes horizontally and vertically down the four individual LED reflectors or projector housings. This model has functional openings but no fog lights—though the pre-refresh model had fog lights.

The front fascia has a silver-painted skid plate-looking material and a front camera. Overall, the styling of this car looks interesting. I might prefer the pre-refresh model versus this new face, but perhaps I need to get used to it. Let me know in the comments below what you think of this Kia Sorento’s new front fascia.

Side Profile and Wheels

Around the side profile, you can see this is The 2025 KIA Sorento’s midsize SUV, available with three rows. The Telluride is technically their full-size to midsize SUV but has the same length since it is just a refresh at 189 inches overall and a wheelbase shy of 111 inches long. Compared to the Telluride, this vehicle is about 7 inches shorter overall, which gives it a more “just right” proportion, although it’s not quite as big and spacious inside as the Telluride.

The wheels have been revised. These are the wheels on the Hybrid: 19-inch wheels with a two-tone machine and black inner spokes with a directional look. They’re riding on 235×55 R19 all-season tires.

The XPR model, which you can see, has the same off-road upgrades as the Telluride, with a 17-inch black wheel and all-terrain-looking tires. Kia didn’t mention if that model has more ground clearance, but it gives it a more rugged look than this Hybrid version.

Rear Styling

Coming to the rear, the taillights are identical to the 2023 model but have a new light signature. Kia says it resembles the Telluride a bit more, with a more masculine and boxy look than the pre-refresh model.

The spoiler appears a little larger. 2025 KIA Sorento offers a digital camera rearview mirror, which is nice. There is updated Kia logo badging, Sorento badging, and the H for Hybrid. If you look at PHEV stands for Plug-In Hybrid. There are no visible exhaust tips but integrated parking sensors and more silver trim.

Interior Features

Opening up the cargo area, you can see the third row’s space is tight when it’s up, offering around 12.6 cubic feet of total storage. There is a bit of underfloor storage for the jack and a spare tire. Folding down the seats expands the cargo space to just under 40 cubic feet, and with the second row folded, you get a maximum of just over 75 cubic feet. The Telluride, of course, offers more space.

The new 2025 KIA Sorento interior features a Midnight Lake Blue exterior and a Dust Blue interior. This high-trim hybrid model has diamond-quilted leather seats that are heated and ventilated, with 12-way power adjustment on the driver’s side and 8-way power on the passenger side.

The latest design language from Kia is evident, with a completely curved display featuring a 12.3-inch digital display and a 12.3-inch center display. The software now includes wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates.

Second and Third Rows

The second row has captain’s chairs, which make it more upscale and limit seating capacity to six. Kia says there are around 41 inches of legroom in the second row. The third row has about 29 inches of legroom for kids or average-sized adults on shorter trips. Features in the third row include two USB-C charging ports and some storage.

Plug-In Hybrid Model

The plug-in hybrid model looks practically identical to the 2025 KIA Sorento hybrid model, with the only notable difference being the charge port door on the rear fender. Kia was still deciding whether to discuss the specs of the 2025 version, but the old model had about 32 miles of electric-only range.

Availability and Pricing

If you want to get your hands on the revised “2025 KIA Sorento” you’ll have to wait until early next year. Kia hasn’t discussed pricing yet, but they did say the gas-only model will launch first as a 2024 model, while the hybrid and plug-in hybrid will come as 2025 models toward the middle or end of 2024.

The current 2023 model starts at around $30,000 and goes up to around $40,000 for the gas model, with the plug-in Hybrid reaching around $52,000 fully loaded.

The 2025 KIA Sorento uses the Opposites United design language, has a distinctive tiger-nose radiator at the front, LED headlights on both sides with a slimmer, and vertically stacked design + daytime running light strips.

The car has redesigned alloy wheels that look more eye-catching and distinctive. The central control area is refined with a reasonable layout, increasing modernity and aesthetics.

The car has a large curved display cluster (split into two smaller 12.3-inch screens of the same size), one screen for the infotainment system with a new operating system and the other. Again, the digital clock cluster is located behind the steering wheel.

The car’s center console has a fingerprint authentication system, which will be used to initiate or activate payments.

The 2025 KIA Sorento is expected to have a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and PHEV or hybrid options. The manufacturer has not yet communicated the rest of the information about this car model.

The 2025 KIA Sorento: seven seats that border on premium, designed for and by travel

The fourth generation has been updated with a design similar to the EV9, with seven seats inside and a range of engines, including Diesel and dual hybridization.

Kia says it is not, nor does it aspire to become, a premium manufacturer. It is becoming increasingly difficult to believe them, at least in the latter case and if we are referring to its top-flight models. The Sorento belongs to that category, an SUV whose fourth generation is being renewed.

The aesthetic changes are much more profound than one would expect in a restyling. They are similar, especially at the front, to those of the brand’s electric flagship, the EV9, another of those cars that is hard to conceive as a generalist.

The changes to the front are particularly noticeable. The headlights are slimmer than in the EV9, although not in the same shape. The Sorento also retains a traditional grille due to the cooling needs of the combustion engines.

The front end conveys a sensation of volume that is continued in the profile and in the rear. The first is highlighted by the new 18—to 20-inch wheels and its 4.81 meters in length. The rear is squared off and has a tailgate, allowing easy boot access.

The Kia Sorento is sold in our market only in a seven-seat configuration. The distribution of these is two seats in the front row, three in the middle, and two more seats that can be hidden if they are not needed in the rear. In this case, there is no option to include two individual seats in the center, as in the EV9.

The front seats have gained a certain degree of comfort, which was not strictly necessary but appreciated. As for space, this row and the middle one offer abundance, especially the second if the rear one is not in use since it can be moved longitudinally.

For their part, the passengers who occupy this final row will have a somewhat narrower space at their disposal, which is acceptable even for adults. However, they must be agile because access to this area requires some contortionism.

The number of rows available and the engine chosen affect the boot capacity. However, the differences between the versions are practically negligible. The minimum load volume available in the plug-in hybrid with all seats deployed is 175 liters, while the maximum for the Diesel with only the front seats in use is 2,011 liters. What is expected is a loading mouth located at an appropriate height.

It is also worth mentioning the leap forward made by the Sorento dashboard. It has inherited the layout of two adjacent screens, with 12.3 inches for each one, which we already know from other brand models. However, no third one exists between the two screens with data from the climate control system, as in the EV9.

Below the central one, another old acquaintance is preserved, such as the touch strip that allows you to choose between shortcuts to certain elements and the climate control controls. Meanwhile, some physical controls and the gear selector are concentrated in the voluminous central console.

Diesel and Hybridization for the Mechanical Range

The mechanical range of the 2025 KIA Sorento changes in details mainly derived from homologations, but in essence, it is the same as it is now. There is a Diesel engine without any electrification, a self-charging hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid. C, eco and zero labels are available, therefore.

The first two also allow you to choose between front or total traction. They all have automatic transmissions; the Diesel has eight speeds, and the hybrids have six.

The diesel engine is a 2.2-litre with 194 horsepower. On paper, it consumes slightly less than the Hybrid—between 5.9 and 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers, with the eco-label model moving between 6.6 and 7—although it is somewhat more expensive in the front-wheel drive versions—just over 2,500 euros.

In contrast, the all-wheel drive versions cost almost the same. Which of the two to choose? If, in addition to all this, we consider that the Hybrid is more powerful, with 215 horsepower – it has a 1.6-litre petrol engine – it seems a more logical purchase.

The plug-in hybrid engine must also be considered because although it shares the same thermal base as the Hybrid – it has a total of 253 horsepower – taking advantage of the extra price it costs – between 7,000 and 10,000 euros with the same equipment as the Hybrid and the Diesel, although it already comes with all-wheel drive as standard – will depend mainly on plugging it in every day.

Only then will we use the 55 kilometers of electric autonomy it offers to avoid spending on fuel. It is, however, a short distance compared to what we are starting to see in the industry today – 100 kilometers have long since stopped being news. It covers daily urban journeys well, but didn’t we agree that the Sorento car is designed for traveling?

Our doubts about the plug-in hybrid engine’s suitability for the Sorento have nothing to do with its performance. It is precisely the one we have tested, and we can only say good things about it.

It offers more than enough power despite losing 12 horsepower compared to the previous version. Its operation in electric mode is smooth and pleasant, and the fuel consumption once the battery is depleted is not outrageous—we do not give a specific figure because we have tested it for just under 100 kilometers.

This is How The 2025 KIA Sorento Behaves on the Road

The 2025 KIA Sorento allows you to cover miles and miles without any complaints about comfort. It is its natural habitat on the highway or similar. It also performs well in the city beyond its size’s logical difficulties.

Not so much on secondary roads with curves, where their length and height force you to slightly advance your maneuvers. And this is not a criticism. It is pure physics, just like the oscillations of the body when braking and leaning, which, without being excessive, are noticeable.

We praised the feel of the steering and brakes, the former, because it once again shows Kia’s progress in this area. A long time ago, Korean models were not particularly good at this point, offering an excessively artificial response. Today, this is not the case.

It only takes a few meters to feel comfortable. And in the case of the brakes, the applause comes precisely because we have driven the plug-in Hybrid. It does not feel 100% like a conventional hydraulic pedal, but it comes close. In any case, we did not have any moment when we misjudged the braking distance due to a lack of sensitivity.

The answer is simple. The typical buyer of the Kia Sorento is a family with several children, ample space needs, and a desire to cover many road miles. The Hybrid seems more logical within that equation than any other purchase with Diesel in tow.
