2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: First Look and What’s New

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has officially arrived, and it’s packed with exciting updates. From new trim levels to feature enhancements, here’s an in-depth look at what Mitsubishi has in store for the latest version of this popular SUV.

New Trim Levels and Editions

The most significant change for 2025 is introducing an additional trim level called the SE. This new trim is positioned between the ES and LE trim levels, offering more options for consumers. For the PHEV version, the available trims include ES, LE, GT, GT Premium (GTP), and the new Noir Edition.

Due to its immense popularity, the Noir Edition, a limited release in 2024, has now become a permanent trim level. This special edition is based on the GT Premium trim and features exclusive all-black styling, including fully blacked-out massage seats, making it a standout option for those who love a sleek, bold look.

SE Trim Features

The new SE trim level enhances styling and features that elevate the driving experience. Key additions include:

– Silver skid plate styling on both the front and rear

– LED fog lights

– Heated, power-folding side mirrors

– Silver roof rails

– Panoramic sunroof with a sunshade

– Three-zone automatic climate control

– Fast Key keyless entry

– Heated steering wheel

– Hands-free power liftgate with adjustable height and kick-motion activation

These upgrades make the SE trim well-rounded, bridging the gap between the base ES and the premium LE trims.

Colors Options and Design Updates

Mitsubishi has made some adjustments to the color palette for 2025. The Deep Bronze color has been discontinued across all PHEV trims. However, the two-tone color scheme has been expanded for the GT and GT Premium trims, offering options like Graphite Gray with a black roof, Red Diamond with a black roof, and Sterling Silver with a black roof. These black-roof designs are prevalent and often sell out quickly due to their stylish appeal.

No Changes in Powertrain

While plenty of new features exist, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander must change the engine, battery size, or range for the 2025 Outlander PHEV. The all-electric range remains at an estimated 62 kilometers (approximately 39 miles) on a full charge. Some users have reported achieving up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) of EV range, depending on driving conditions.

Updates to the Mitsubishi App

Mitsubishi has also updated its app services, including remote and safeguard services. The current two-year package has been restructured to a five-year Safeguard package and a one-year Remote package.

Remote Services (one year) include:

– Remote door lock/unlock

– Horn and lights activation

– Vehicle finder

After the first year, you must renew the Remote Services subscription, though the Safeguard Services will continue for five years.

Mitsubishi announces a new generation of its flagship.

It has been missing from our continent for some time, and since 2022, we have known its new face, in addition to practically all its characteristics with which it intends to conquer the D segment once it lands in our country. Yes, we are talking about the new-generation Mitsubishi Outlander, which has been sold for some time in Japan and the United States.

Although it is based on the current Nissan X-Trail platform, the Asian model has been developed from scratch following the ‘I-Fu-Do-Do’ design concept, which, in Japanese, means authentic and majestic. The Outlander is influenced by the 2019 Engelberg Concept prototype, being the first to feature a new interpretation of the brand’s well-known Dynamic Front Shield.

The low and high beams are lower on the robust front bumper, while a strip of LEDs at the top is responsible for the daytime running lighting and the indicators. In profile, it bears certain similarities with the Nissan above model. At the rear are horizontal taillights and a raised bumper with an integrated diffuser.

The interior of the new Mitsubishi Outlander has received special attention from the designers. For this reason, the Japanese SUV will present high-quality materials, with improved finishes and the possibility of having three rows of seats.

The entire dashboard has been redesigned, and now we find a 12.3-inch touch screen at the top, while the air conditioning controls are located at the bottom, with a center console that integrates a small gear selector. Size and rotary knob for driving programs. The instrument panel, for its part, is 9-inch digital.

Technical specifications of the Mitsubishi Outlander 2025

Using a new platform, the latest generation Outlander has gained in size, measuring 4.68 meters long by 1.86 wide and 1.74 high. Its wheelbase has been extended by almost 4 centimeters to reach 2.66 m. This new architecture is also accompanied by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine recently developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

It produces 184 horsepower and a maximum torque of 245 Nm, associated with a CVT-type automatic gearbox that emulates eight speeds. However, this mechanic will not reach our country.

Mitsubishi says the SUV incorporates an all-wheel drive system inherited from the world of rallying, which it calls ‘Super All-Wheel Control 4WD’. This comes with the driving above mode selector, allowing you to adapt the engine and traction to different conditions based on six configurations: standard, asphalt, gravel, snow, mud, and deep snow. This control is also available in single-axle drive versions without the mode set for mud.

In Spain, it will be available only in plug-in hybrid format, with a powertrain that will come with critical new features since its autonomy in 100% electric mode has significantly increased. The Japanese SUV can now offer up to 87 kilometers, thanks to a 20 kWh capacity battery.

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander has not revealed the system’s total power, which comprises a 2.4-litre thermal block and two electric motors. Still, it has shown that the performance of its electric drives has increased by around 40%. In addition, the Japanese brand has provided this version with a new active yaw control (AYC) function that can send power to the front and rear axles and apply brakes to the wheels to vector torque.

Prices and launch of the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander

The Japanese brand indicates that the new generation of the plug-in hybrid Outlander will be publicly revealed in Madrid, specifically on October 1. Its production will start at the end of this year, and the first units will reach the market in early 2025, joining the renewed product portfolio led by the Mitsubishi ASX and Mitsubishi Colt.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: An attractive SUV for 2025

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is back on the European market. The pioneer of plug-in hybrid SUVs will again be available in Spain in its third generation, although we will have to wait until early 2025 for that to happen. Adapted to our market, the European version will be more potent than the current version on sale in the United States.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander is a five-seat SUV (it is also sold in the United States with a seven-seater with a third row of seats, but it will not be offered in Europe), measuring 4.71 meters long by 1.74 meters high. The wheelbase is 2.705 meters, and the ground clearance is 19.8 cm, almost a centimeter higher than the previous model.

The aesthetics of the new Mitsubishi Outlander

Aesthetically, it is an attractive car, with a front with headlights divided between the thin upper daytime running lights, the large lower lights, and the fog lights just below. The grille is vast, and the model name appears on the bonnet. The side view makes it clear that it is an SUV with the wheel arches highlighted in black, the ground clearance, the large 20-inch wheels, and the high waistline.

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander’s roof, which can be contrasted in gloss black, rests on pillars of the same color.

The most striking element is the contrasting black roof (which will be optional or standard in some versions), which continues on all the pillars except the rear one, which is also black. The aforementioned rear pillar is wider and partially in body color, while in the lower part of the windows, there is a chrome strip that rises on the rear pillar almost to the roof.

The rear view of the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is that of a typical SUV, with very thin horizontal taillights. The rear design is very similar to that of other cars of the same type, with very stylized taillights, bumpers with a light grey plastic lower part, like the front ones, and the brand logo in the center. In short, it is a nice car that fits perfectly into the segment it is aimed at.

The interior of the Mitsubishi Outlander

The new Mitsubishi Outlander’s dashboard maintains a conventional design without the large, fashionable double screens.

The interior looks like a conventional car, without any great design displays, and with conventional-sized screens. The central one is at the top, and the climate control controls are on the console. We have the conventional gear lever and the driving mode selector between the seats, allowing us to choose up to seven modes.

The quality and finish of the cabin are excellent, especially considering that the units we used in Finland were for the United States, which is a less demanding market in this regard. The front seats have adequate space and a high and dominant driving position, but they are easy to adapt to, thanks to the multiple seat and steering wheel adjustments.

The instrumentation is digital, but it has a classic design: a speedometer and a second instrument that allows us to monitor the battery charge and whether the car is consuming or recharging. A round steering wheel with a good feel completes a classic and pleasant-to-use control layout.

The rear seats are very spacious. For Europe, the seven-seat option is not available. The spacious rear seats and trunk will change for Europe, and the third-row option available in U.S. units will be eliminated.

Engines and transmission of the new Mitsubishi Outlander

The new Outlander will arrive in Europe in a configuration that is yet to be fully defined, but it will only be sold as a plug-in hybrid. The gasoline engine is a 4-cylinder, 2.4-litre displacement and has, at least in the American version, a power output of 131 hp.

This engine combines two other electric motors, one on each drive axle. The front one has 85 KW and the rear 100, equivalent to 115 and 136 hp, but for Europe, the rear one will be at least 110 kW (150 hp), so the final power should be around 250 hp.

The Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid system will have around 250 hp of power for Europe.

The American model claims a range of 62 km. Still, considering that the battery is 20 kWh and there are differences between the American EPA homologation and the European WLTP, the range for Europe should be closer to 80 km. It should be remembered in this regard that the battery of the Outlander sold in Spain until a few months ago had a capacity of 13.8 kWh and a homologated range of 45 km.

This is a car that works in hybrid mode in two different ways. It can be used up to 135 km/h in electric mode, so someone who drives about 80-90 km daily in the city can use it only in electric mode. When the car’s battery runs out, it switches to hybrid mode.

It can do so in two ways: with the petrol engine moving the wheels and the electric motors helping out in high-demand phases, for example, when accelerating or recovering, or with the electric motor propelling the car and the petrol motor working as a generator. Most of the time, the Outlander will use this second formula on the road. Since we could only drive the car on ice, we had to wait for a later test to assess its dynamic behavior on asphalt.

In this first contact in Finland, we could draw very few conclusions since we had only driven the car on ice. The ice tracks at the driving school were very slippery during the test. Without a small layer of snow on top and with winter tires, the track was very slick and only allowed us to test the different driving modes.

In normal mode, the car uses sensors to analyze the grip of each wheel and acts accordingly, adapting the management electronics to ensure progress. In addition, there is a snow mode in which the car tries to reduce the gas as much as possible, avoiding initial slippage, and for starting on ice or driving on it, it works very well, preventing the car from sliding and moving forward according to what the steering wheel indicates.

The Outlander has a single-gear transmission on the front axle for the petrol engine that is used when powering the car, and in electric mode, it also has a single gear. Its S-AWC transmission system distributes torque between the wheels of both axles depending on the traction capacity of each one to make the most of the power and achieve the best possible traction on slippery surfaces.

In addition to the standard and snow modes, there are specific modes for mud, dirt, asphalt, and eco modes to save fuel and power modes to get the most out of both engines.

There is yet to be a definition of the range or price of the new 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander in Europe.

Mitsubishi has not announced the safety and comfort equipment that this car will have, the expected levels of finish, or even the price, given that it will not be on sale for almost a year and that the final definition of the European model has not been finalized.

Mitsubishi is in the process of developing its synergies with Renault, as demonstrated by the recent launch of the Colt and ASX models, derived from the Renault Clio and Captur, and the announcement of the launch, in 2025, of an electric C-segment SUV with a 100% Mitsubishi design, but which will use the electric platform of the Renault Mégane and Scénic E-Tech.

However, it is also interesting to see how the Japanese brand will alternate Renault models in its range with other models of its own, such as this Outlander PHEV, which combines two technologies that the brand’s Japanese engineers have mastered perfectly: four-wheel drive and plug-in hybridization. The main problem is that this car, on sale in the United States since 2021, will not reach us until 2025, four years after its launch.

Market competitiveness has grown during his years of absence.

Yes, plug-in hybrids used to be much fewer than now, but that fact is enough to understand the importance of Outlander for the brand and the general market. The root of its success was a truly affordable price and mixed driving.

At its withdrawal, the most complete Outlander PHEV, with the Kaiteki + finish, was available for 41,800 euros. A 4.7 meter SUV, well finished, with plug-in hybrid technology, correct equipment, and good habitability. Today, a similar model costs several thousand euros more, although it must also be recognized that technology has improved a lot.

Despite having an advanced electrical system, the Outlander never stood out for its high efficiency. It was ideal for short-distance daily trips with just 45 kilometers of approved electric range. Trips to and from work where hardly any gasoline was consumed.

The problem was when the combustion engine started. Then, fuel consumption skyrocketed above the barrier of 8 liters on average. Added to a tiny fuel tank, the range barely exceeded the border of 500 kilometers. Despite this, it sold very well.

The lack of rivals may have boosted its fame, but the Outlander proved to be better than expected in many aspects. That’s what we expect from its replacement. It will be the fourth generation to set foot on Spanish streets, the third with PHEV technology.

It will do so a decade later than the first Outlander PHEV presented. As for the image, although Mitsubishi has released a very dark teaser, we can easily guess the lines already known in the American model.

The Japanese presented it in 2021, so we are talking about a model already established in the market. It will maintain the philosophy of quality and balance, with many outstanding pieces of equipment and a complete package of assistants and safety elements.

Thanks to the CMF platform, inherited from other Nissan and Renault models, the Outlander will grow above the 4.7-meter limit. Logically, Mitsubishi will only bet on plug-in hybrid mechanics with front- or all-wheel drive systems.

It is expected to have the same mechanical assembly as its American brother. A scheme capable of developing 250 horsepower associated with a 20 kWh capacity battery that offers excellent electrical autonomy. Undoubtedly, the key to success will be, once again, the price.

Market competition dictates that the starting price should be close to 40,000 euros. Today, the Outlander has to face many more rivals, such as the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, KIA Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, and many more—models who have not taken vacations and have continued bidding in the category.

Conclusion

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV brings exciting updates with the new SE trim, expanded color options, and the permanent Noir Edition. While the powertrain remains the same, these changes enhance buyers’ overall driving experience and customization options. Stay tuned for more walk-around videos and comparisons as we delve deeper into the features of this versatile plug-in hybrid SUV.
