TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 2024, COMPLETE RENOVATION
As expected, the new generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 completely separates itself from the previous model. It arrives as a new proposal but remains faithful to its roots of being a reliable, family-friendly vehicle with true all-terrain capabilities.
First of all, it should be mentioned that it is technically called the Toyota Land Cruiser, with this figure placing it as a more recent model than the now discontinued Land Cruiser 200 but below its older sister, the Land Cruiser 300. This new is an intermediate point within its range, which also includes the Series 70 that also received a renewal. It corresponds to the model that we know of in Colombia as Prado.
As anticipated, the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 is mounted on the same TNGA-F platform as the new Lexus GX and the Land Cruiser 300, which also shares the same wheelbase of 2.85 meters. Of course, its dimensions are a little more contained: 4.92 meters long, 1.98 wide and 1.87 high.
Other vital figures considering that we are talking about an all-terrain vehicle: an attack angle of up to 31°, a departure angle of up to 22°, and a ventral angle of up to 25° are cited thanks to a ground clearance of up to 22 cm.
Features of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser
In this new generation, the Toyota Land Cruiser is presented as a more comfortable and spacious model than ever. Still, at the same time, it has superior off-road capabilities that we have verified first-hand with a route, mainly 4×4, through Scottish lands.
This new approach, which represents a break with previous generations, is simultaneously a return to origins. Its neo-retro design recovers the robust and squared lines of the first Land Cruiser, including the two-tone decorations and typical off-road accessories.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 measures 4.92 meters long, 1.98 wide, and 1.87 high, while its wheelbase is 2.85. But its design not only stands out for its retro and massive appearance, but it also stands out for its shorter overhangs, sharper corners, and a narrower lower body area that undoubtedly influences its off-road capabilities. In contrast, much bodywork is designed to be easily replaceable with new ones.
At first glance, the marked bumpers and a small upper grille stand out, including the classic Toyota letters to the detriment of the brand logo, accompanied on the flanks by two small rectangular headlights with LED technology. The rear is not far behind, with an equally solid C-pillar and a notable widening of the wheel arches, with vertical LED lights that follow the same shapes as the usual optics on eighties Land Cruisers.
The commitment to that retro aesthetic offers two designs inspired by predecessors, such as the Land Cruiser J60 from the eighties, similar to what we saw in the return of the Ford Bronco or Suzuki Jimny.
In this way, the so-called First Edition opts for a different look with rounded headlights with full LED technology, two-tone paint, and unique wheels, as well as accessories such as the shark antenna, the longitudinal bars of the roof and other trim and body protections, which are not available in the access model.
However, the complete range of the Land Cruiser, in which it will be available from 2025, includes an entry-level GX version with rounded headlights as standard and two superior ones called VX and VXL with squared headlights and, in the case of the latter, with technology—Built-in LED matrix.
Test drive with the Toyota Land Cruiser 2024
The new Land Cruiser comes with a 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine with a power of 204 HP and a maximum torque of 500 Nm, associated with an 8-speed Direct Shift automatic gearbox.
In addition, it is compatible, as is already the case with the outgoing model, with the sustainable HVO100 biodiesel, which does not detract one bit from the performance of this all-terrain vehicle capable of towing loads of up to 3,500 kg.Â
Starting in 2025, this engine will be joined by adding 48-volt mild hybrid (MHEV) technology, allowing the off-roader to have the ECO label from the DGT in all its available variants starting next year.
New platform and technology
The GA-F platform is responsible for giving life to the new Land Cruiser. It is a base that combines high rigidity with the possibility of including numerous driving assistants on the road and in the field.
This frame is 50% more rigid than the previous one, and combined with the new bodywork, the resistance of the whole is another 30% higher. Toyota has also improved the primary suspension, especially regarding wheel articulation.
One of the most notable novelties is the electric power steering EPS –Electric Power Steering– which allows for smoother and more precise steering and improved maneuverability at any pace. The truth is that it is straightforward to use and transmits a lot to the driver, which is what this type of technology is for.
In addition, it allows the so-called Trajectory Maintenance System to be incorporated as part of the complete package of Toyota Safety Sense safety assistants, which has been reinforced here.
The other big debut that the new Land Cruiser brings, even within the entire Toyota family, is the arrival of a disconnectable front stabilizer bar.
This stabilizing technology with disconnection mechanism -Stabilizer with Disconnection Mechanism (SDM) can be activated or deactivated using a control located on the dashboard, allowing extra flexibility to be provided to the ideal chassis when driving on very rugged sections, adding additional flexibility: comfort and handling.
This technology improves the adaptation of the wheels on rocky surfaces and thus keeps the four rocks in contact with the ground. Additionally, the suspensions have 20% more travel with this option. It works up to a maximum of 25 km/h.
The truth is that there is an improvement in comfort, and it also allows you to advance through quite complicated terrain, such as trails with stone soles, where the car moves forward with complete solvency.
Along with all these new features, there are other improvements, such as a Multi-terrain Monitor, which, thanks to a camera and a screen, will allow us to see better where we are going under the vehicle. At the same time, the Multi-terrain Selector adapts the vehicle’s performance automatically in moments of off-road driving.
The camera is located on the front and reproduces what happens under the body, an area with poor visibility. This way, possible incidents with obstacles that could complicate the route are avoided.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 also has a descent control that works between 4 and 30 km/h, with the H4 and L4 options for the eight-speed Direct Swift automatic transmission.
Continuing with the off-road theme, the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is now mounted at the front in a double wishbone scheme with double shock absorbers, assisted by a stabilizer bar disconnect using a button. At the back, it has a multi-link suspension. The permanent all-wheel drive system includes a low-speed, central differential lock and an electronic rear differential lock that can distribute power up to 50/50 to each wheel.
The Multi-Terrain Select system is within the standard equipment of all 2024 Toyota Land Cruisers, which works in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low and incorporates the driving modes Mud, Dirt, and Sand. It also equips the Crawl Control, a cruise control for off-road, descent control, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor that, thanks to an advanced camera, displays the image on the central screen of the console.
Turning then to the interior, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser also shows a significant evolution compared to the current model, with a dashboard designed to allow the best visibility to the front. The instrument panel is digital, and the 8-inch central screen is replaced by a 12.3-inch one in the most equipped versions.
The multimedia system allows remote updates, wireless connectivity for Apple Car Play and Android Auto, a wireless charging port, two USB-C charging ports both in the front and in the second row, remote access thanks to the Digital Key that can also be connected to the phone, and keyless ignition. Depending on the version, equipment is added.
What is also standard for all versions of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 safety package that incorporates collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, dynamic cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and high beam assistant, among others.
One of the main novelties of the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 is that it will be offered in configurations with different levels of hybridization. One of these will be equipped with a  1.87 kWh nickel-metal hydride battery that will be located above the rear axle, so the variants with this engine will only be available with two rows of seats and not three.
Depending on the market where it will be marketed, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will then have different engines available:
- A 2.7-liter gasoline engine with 163 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque.
- A 2.8-liter turbo diesel with 204 horsepower and 500 Nm and a 48V light hybridization option.
- The 2.4-liter turbo gasoline, with 281 horses and 430 Nm, or with the hybridization mentioned in the previous paragraph, raises the figures to 330 horses and 630 Nm of torque.
Although always subjective, regarding the design of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, it is worth mentioning the brand’s objective of giving it a new image that highlights its all-terrain capabilities while returning to some model lines from the past. As you can see in the photos, the version with round headlights corresponds to the 1958 variant for the United States (the year in which the first Land Cruiser arrived in that country), which RIGID explorers also complement.
Finally, for the United States, the First Edition version will also be available, which will be limited to 5,000 units and will also have round headlights but with other finishes, a roof grille, side running boards, and more off-road equipment, among other elements.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 will be manufactured in the Japanese plants of Tahara and Hino. It will begin to be sold in Japan during the first half of 2024, to continue later with other countries and regions. According to representatives of the brand in Colombia, its arrival in our country is expected in mid-2024.
Analysis of the Toyota Land Cruiser 2024:
Constantly, Auto analyzed every detail of what the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 has to offer, which arrived changed but had a lot of historical weight in its silhouette.
The Toyota Land Cruiser has been a market icon for decades, especially in the off-road field. Since it arrived in the United States in 1958, this SUV has been synonymous with resistance, off-road capability, and durability.
Now, in 2024, the Land Cruiser returns with a new generation that promises to keep its reputation alive, although with some significant changes,
In this way, it undergoes a notable transformation compared to its predecessor. Although it retains its robustness and performance, it is presented in a more compact version, with two rows of seats and a design of straight, square lines, following the current trend in SUV design.
Now, it does its thing mechanically with the introduction of the Ice Force Max hybrid engine, which has already been seen in other Toyota (Tacoma) models. Thus, this turbocharged V4 power unit offers 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, whereas all versions of the 2024 Land Cruiser come equipped with this engine.
Precisely, in terms of available versions, it is offered in three variants: 1958, which refers to the year of its arrival in the United States and represents the most basic version; Standard Land Cruiser, which falls somewhere in between; and First Edition, which is presented as the most complete and exclusive option.
From an aesthetic point of view, the Land Cruiser 2024 stands out for its retro-modern design, with round LED lights and the Toyota logo written on the front grille with a square and robust silhouette, ideal for giving greater strength to the brand’s image as an all-terrain vehicle.
Inside, the 1958 Land Cruiser offers heated cloth seats, a multifunction steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, and a 7-inch instrument panel. Although specific luxury details and high-quality materials are missing, the interior space is generous, with enough space for passengers and a large trunk, especially if you opt for the two-row seating configuration.
However, it proves its worth in its off-road performance, as it is equipped with an all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission, making this new Land Cruiser a vehicle capable of efficiently tackling rugged terrain.
On the other hand, thanks to the hill descent control system, differential locks, and traction control system, driving experiences a new experience in a controlled manner without leaving emotion aside, especially when traveling in more adverse conditions.
